"Velvet Buzzsaw"
by Dan Gilroy

Starring: J. Gyllenhaal, Z. Ashton, J. Malkovich, R. Russo, and others
The formula for the movie ' Velvet Buzzsaw' looks like this: alive paintings + feminine Jake Gyllenhaal together with the non-feminine John Malkovich and all this in a wrapper of a surreal motion picture, showing the everyday busy work in the art gallery, where, by a certain coincidence, soon will hang the works of unknown author with an unusual past and the mysterious present of his bewitching paintings.

The impressions of the film are amplified when you involuntarily notice how harmoniously Gyllenhaal fit into the overall picture of what is happening and the reason for this are mental references to his previous works where the atmosphere of the film was also partly insane, specifically "Donnie Darko" (2001) and "Nightcrawler" (2014). Both films are effective and dramatic in nature. Therefore, the second component formula of this movie looks like this: Jake Gyllenhaal + extraordinary plot= extravagant movie. Although Gyllenhaal does not appear in the film so often, he succeeds in penetrating the memory of the viewer.

A nice bonus in the film was the appearance of many characters who, in general, were not related to what was happening, but with their presence, they complemented the overall picture and made it more saturated. John Malkovich will be remembered for his fleeting occurrences, as well as Natalia Dyer from "Stranger Things" with her presence in all key scenes of the denouement of the film.
What is the genre of "Velvet Buzzsaw"?
The film itself is a representative of the satirical horror film genre and this is specifically what amazed me. You can enjoy the compositionally harmonious component of the picture, get interested in the topic of a mysterious tattoo on the shoulder of the Rodora Haze character and be horrified by the decision of the director Dan Gilroy to mock the main characters, putting them in soul-trembling circumstances.
The tandem of the actual 'junk' of the 21st century with the main characters dances to the tune of skepticism of dialogues: here is hidden cynicism in the form of heroes ignoring replicas of secondary characters that they supposedly do not notice; close-up of Ray-Ban glasses and a new generation of Apple's AirPods in ears.

Netflix decided to focus on the standard set of socially advanced individuals of 2019, apparently inspired by the 'Black Mirror', which in turn demonstrates to the viewer the detrimental effect of the influence of gadgets and other new technologies that people are so used to.
