Directed by Ben Stiller Starring: Paul Dano, Benicio del Toro, Patricia Arquette Average rating: 8
Benicio del Toro + Paul Dano + story based on real events = action-packed TV show, which may be compared with the "True Detective" for sure and its richness of the plot, as well as a sharp turn of events.
In 2015, two prisoners of Dannemora Prison escaped. Two prisoners – absolutely two different personalities, which are not similar in nature and the reason of their life imprisonment. Convicted killer Richard Matt has a hobby of painting and holds a respectful position among "reputable" people in prison, while David Sweat distinguished by good work in the workshop and periodically maintains close relations with the main head there Joyce Mitchell.
The fate of the two prisoners intertwined when Richard by accident finds pipe passage under his prison camera and he, together with his cellmate, decides to crank up a serious matter - to escape.
Even though in the first series, from the very beginning, the viewer opens the curtain of the denouement, which says that two criminals managed to escape from prison, the story does not lose its fervor. Moreover, the series becomes even more interesting to watch.
The key points in this film are the images of heroes, their characteristic description which is gradually revealed to the viewer. Serious Richard turns out to be a smart player who skillfully pulls prison workers to his side and unobtrusively makes them part of a criminal plan. In turn, David becomes the main figure in the game of life, putting everything at stake and cutting through an iron wall at night with a file.
The directors of the serial managed to combine two completely different protagonists who differ in both worldviews and ways of achieving goals. One of the escaped criminals does not plead a criminal and spends his term for the acts of another guilty individual.
A separate topic to discuss is the key female figure in the series - Joyce Mitchell. She is not attractive and unhappy in her second marriage, and in order not to make excuses for her unhappy life, she finds solace and begins an intimate relationship with David Suett. Joyce becomes a prototype of human greed and ingratitude, which draws into itself like a swamp.
Director's work is at level 99 out of a hundred, while the game of actors has reached level 100. This TV show does not require tolerable musical accompaniment since all emphasis is placed on dialogues, images, and raising of human themes.
The TV show is decent, loud and absolutely successful in its genre.
